“Sam, you know,” Cas says, and he feels a little dizzy. “Your eyes remind me of my favourite place to rest on earth. It’s this tree in the Amazon towards the East, and the ecosystem is so interconnected and alive a hundred feet above the ground. It’s fascinating.”
“Oh, uh...” Sam seems uncomfortable again. Cas knows he screwed up. He knows he’s not supposed to talk about the Winchesters' appearances. Especially not complimentary. Especially not when he wants to kiss skin right beside Sam’s eye. “Thanks? I guess.”
“Dean doesn’t want to know you feel any semblance of forgiveness towards me,” Cas reiterates. He wants to escape it, but for some reason, it’s sitting uncomfortably. Cas is starting to think all the things that sit so uncomfortably in his mind are actually icebergs.
“No! I mean, maybe? He’s working through it,” Sam says. “But I don’t think he’d take well to knowing about the rest.”
“The rest?”
“You know, my. Feelings for you,” Sam says, and he seems flustered. “My desires ,” he says, except it’s tinged with disdain. Cas’s whole body feels so alive.
“I feel the same,” Cas says, and he doesn’t actually know. He’s unsure what Sam is on about, to some extent, if it matches whatever crescendoing inside him. He’s briefly worried Sam’s going to take it as Cas assuming Sam has anything that needs to be forgiven for, but he can’t stop because the word desires out of Sam’s mouth and the way he’s staring at Sam’s lips as if they hold the answers to infinity has his cognitive processing undone. Sam’s eyes widen before he squints at him. His body is oriented more towards Cas, and Cas can’t remember how they got standing this close. He feels like a live wire.
“You.. do?” Sam says, and he sounds baffled. 
“Yes,” Cas replies, and at that Sam’s expression finally melts into a diamond smile.
