Castiel knows that Sam, logical and reserved Sam, who expends great effort to suppress his baser instinct, would not admit any of this aloud if he were not in desperate pain. It makes him sound bestial. Dangerous. If it were Dean standing here instead of Castiel, he knows the older Winchester would be horrified. Was horrified – as evidenced by Sam’s earlier captivity.
Castiel is much more practical than that.
There is very little time to lose. Even now Dean Winchester draws closer to his brother's location, and should he find them he will surely interfere with Heaven's plans. But Sam is hurting. He may not be able to complete his task in his current state.
His hunger could prove useful, Castiel decides.
It is not clean. In fact, it nears blasphemy. But Castiel must do his duty. It is either him or the demon witch, and though he knows they would guide him to the same path in the end, he suddenly finds the idea of allowing her to govern Sam Winchester’s fate intolerable.
He places a hand on Sam’s shoulder, anchoring him where he stands. “It’s alright, Sam. Heaven will provide.”
